March 2. 2005 - I know, I know! You're all "Where are you?" Well, I was never really gone, just very, very busy. Many of you are wondering what I've been doing since I left FNX (aside from having a ball staying out late and sleeping even later). Truth is, I've been able to do a lot of things I wasn't able to before. I moved into the new crib, fixed it up, and got started with some writing - something I've really wanted to do for a long time. Check out my new rock news column "The Rock Dirt" in 168 magazine. I'm also doing some record and show reviews.

Next Rising Tide series show happens Thursday, March 24 at Great Scott in Allston. Visit the Rising Tide series site.

I've been asked to take part in the Rock and Roll Social, a monthly night of networking and camaraderie for the Boston area music community. There's an amazing pool of talent here that deserves support - details available here: Rock and Roll Social.

AND
I've joined the cast of "On the Town with Mikey Dee" - named after its founder, the tireless local music supporter and legend, Mikey Dee. It's the best local music program in Boston., airing every Wednesday at 9pm and hosted by a revolving cast of local DJs. Streaming live now at wmfo.org. I'm having more fun on radio than I've had in a very long time.

January 7, 05 - It is true? Could it be? Well, there is a lot cookin' in the new year! And it's all good. Believe you me. I'm setting my sights on many things including more music promotion (hence the addition of Anngelle Wood Productions) - in fact, the next Rising Tide series show is coming in March. I thought it'd tie in nicely with "Women's History" month seeing as it focuses on girls and their bands.  There are other things up my sleeve that I can't get into, but I will soon...stay tuned! I love the music in this town and I assure you that it will entail promoting Boston and New England music live, on-air, in print and online. Send your news. I'm adding rock dirt to the news page. Thank you for the many emails and ims. I love you all...

hi, i'm anngellemy askew year in review, 2004

"Comeback of the Year" Award - Goes to Jesus. I didn’t see The Passion of the Christ, I read the book. I know how it ends.

The “I Want My $8 Back” Award - The Day After Tomorrow. I didn’t think it was possible that a movie of about an apocalyptic ice age could suck so badly. It did.

Movie that incited the most dialogue - Definitely Fahrenheit 911. Love it or hate it, we’re still talking about it.

The “I Don’t Get What The Big Deal Is” Movie Award - Sideways, saw it. Eh. Good luck at the Golden Globes.

The “I Don’t Get What The Big Deal Is” TV Award - CSI – all of them. I'm holding out for CSI: Nashua.
Now that’ll be worth watching.

My Movie of the Year - Endless Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Muy Excellente. I can’t remember being more moved by a film. Jim Carrey totally redeems himself for all the crap he’s dished out to us in recent memory (think suck factor the size of Bruce Almighty). And Kate Winslet, well, I think I love her.

Others worth mentioning - Garden State. Zach Braff made a brilliant movie and chose really amazing music for its soundtrack. Anchorman - Will Farrell = comedic genius.

The “Die, Please, Just Die” Award – Anna Nicole Smith. We wanted less of her this year - just not due to diet pills and lipo. Be careful what you wish for.

The “Please Turn to God” Award - Courtney Love. ‘Cause you know that heart is oh-so-black with sin.  She did little musically this year, well, can we really refer to her America’s Sweetheart record anything but an attempt?   I wanted to like it. I really did.

Bad TV - there’s a lot but the worst - Jason Alexander’s latest attempt at a sitcom – Listen up. I’m not listening.

Best Live TV Moment - Ashlee Simpson’s lip-synch slip on Saturday Night Live. Proving how much she truly sucks.

Good TV - Desperate Housewives – it’s edgy, it’s dark, and it’s funny. And the hottest women on television are all over 40. It is the new 30. In your face, O.C.!

Best TV - Though it’s not a new show, it really came into its own this year. The Daily Show with John Stewart. The most entertaining half-hour on TV (make that about 17 minutes with commercials and then he drags a out a guest...). The best fake news show on television. Made the best fun of the political process this election. If only I could be on a show that good.

Records of the Year
Modest Mouse, Good News for People Who Love Bad News, finally getting the attention they deserve

A Perfect Circle,  Emotive - not covers, rather interpretations
Garden State soundtrack – The Shins, Frou Frou, Iron and Wine
Green Day, American Idiot - worth all the hype. Brilliant.
Coheed and Cambria,  In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 – great prog-rock record, though they are very stoned and silly people
Interpol, Antics – every band should copy them. Maybe you’ll have a chance to be almost as good
Taking Back Sunday, Where You Want To Be – my favorite record this year, not one bad song on this record. They will be indie no more.

Boston-Based Records of the Year
Quintaine Americana, Sharpshooter Blues, released on Traktor 7 records
Frank Smith, Burn This House Down – a band, not a guy – on Lonesome Recordings
Runner and the Thermodynamics, Self-Titled – Ace Fu Records
Dresden Dolls, Self-Titled - released on singer Amanda Palmer’s own 8ft records. They’ve since signed to Roadrunner

Live rock shows

Velvet Revolver at Avalon - swagger rock at its finest. STP songs, GNR song, VR songs, GNR songs – Axl who?

Stellastarr* at Avalon – well exceeded my expectations
Taking Back Sunday at Avalon - Outstanding show
Dresden Dolls - Oh, the cacophonous sounds these two make. Best "War Pigs" cover since Faith No More's on The Real Thing. I've already requested they do Slayer's "Reigning Blood" cause they do love metal.

Highlights of the year – Definitely  meeting Ozzy. I love the guy. Matt Damon was cool and hot. Nice teeth.
Other cool interviews i got to do - Interpol (awesome), Duran Duran (really awesome), Coheed and Cambria (silly, kind of stupid), Krist Novoselic (cool, got him to talk about the earliest days and the last days of Nirvana), Dave Navarro (a very cool, polite guy - a gentleman? yes, I think so), Melissa Auf Der Maur (sweetest person in rock, would share no dirt on Courtney)...

Tool of the Year - Chris Carrabba, Dashboard Confessional. Mean, mean man. I'm not a fan. The End.

New year, New music - things to look forward to
Including new QotSA in March, later - New Brand New, Deathcab for Cutie, AFI and Sigur Ros - can't wait.

Dimebag Darrell

Dec 9, 2004 - It's a sad day for metal fans. We bid farewell to one of the greatest guitar players of our time - Dimebag Darrell, guitarist for seminal Dallas, TX metal band Pantera. Dimebag was shot and killed last night as his new band Damageplan began its set at a the Alrosa Villa club in Columbus, Ohio. A witness to the shootings said a man climbed onto the stage , started yelling at Dimebag about breaking up Pantera, then shot him five or six times at close range. Four others were killed, including the still-unidentified shooter. Vinnie Paul, drummer for both Pantera and Damageplan, also Dimebag's brother, was said to be among the injured but is okay. No word on the other members at this time. There's been no comment from members of Pantera. Though I never met Dimebag, he is said to be one of the nicest people you could meet. Pantera is a favorite of mine, and Dime is one hell of a guitar player. He will rock for eternity.

*Updated, Dec 13 - Obviously more information has become available. A senseless murder of not one, but 4 people that night - Dime, a fan, members of the Damageplan crew and an employee of the club. Fortunately a quick-thinking police officer acted before more lives were lost. Read what Vinnie Paul said about his brother Dime.

scott weiland, ala axl 1988, at avalonin a word, outstanding (aside from avalon being as packed as it could possibly be!). it was essentially a gnr show, for which i was most excited as i never did see them in the 80s. not sure why i didn't. weiland nailed the gnr songs, he is an incredible front man. made me say AXL WHO? they picked the perfect stp songs. the first vr single, "slither", reminds me a lot of sex type thing. which was a nice segue, was it not (for those of you who were there that is)? i do love the new song, it wreaks of the rock we were raised on. it's got such swagger. having not heard the record yet, the only other vr song i recognized was the hulk soundtrack tune, set me free. contraband is being kept very close to the vest, so to speak. slash ripped, went peter frampton talk box for a time.

bass player duff mckagan hasn't gotten the credit he deserves. he was outstanding as he handled a few of the gnr numbers with scott.

highlights: it's so easy - for which weiland donned an "homage to the axl" policeman's cap throwing the crowd into a fever pitch;

sex type thing - bigger rock backed by slash, he's arguably one of the greatest; used to love her - superbly done in a sort of smoky, country-esque style; mr. brownstone - complete with sorum faking us out with various intros - you could be mine into paradise city into brownstone - fists flailing, crowd chanting, simply awesome.

they closed with negative creep, probably the biggest surprise of the night (well, besides the fact that weiland's style meshed so well). it left all those stuck-in-the-80s gnr fans lost when they kicked into that it. you could see them all, "what's this? must be on the new record!" shrug.

and how great did they look? we're talking 0% body fat. 3/5 of this band is over 40 - tack on the equivalent of 20 more years for the hard livin'. this was a rock show, people. me likey. don't let this get around but i think mike baldino dug it too. and he hates stp and big rock shows.

daven as the walrusanngelle and daven

may 29 my 12-year-old nephew, daven, has chosen me a his "hero." this thursday, june 3 i will join 6th graders at timberlane elementary in nh for the "hero in our lives" brunch. i'm very honored. seems i've affected someone's life positively. i'll probably cry like a mother at a dance recital! **update: i did the best i could not to embarrass the kid in front of his class, but i did cry a little...

may 29 - need a stage name? try the glitter & glamour generator. please refer to me from now on as ruby marvelous. thank you. good night.

may 28 - summer is nearly here. i'm stoked. some of us are on a mission to bring back our favorite childhood new england-isms or local slang. for instance, if you're in a hurry to go somewhere, you should "book it." if someone pisses you off and you'd like to refer to them negatively, they are a "dink." i quite fancy "queerbait" and "gaylord" as a term of endearment much like the more current term bonehead. it brings back such fond memories. don't get pissed. how could a bunch of third graders be wrong? if something is fantastic it's pissah, if something is completely outstanding, it is wicked pissah. i love this shit.

kurt cobainApril 5, 2004 – Ten years later. Things have certainly changed but the feelings remain. It is amazing to me what emotions have resurfaced as we commemorate this day in history - the day Kurt Cobain died. When Nirvana hit the East Coast, I was a ravenous 20-year-old kid. My friends and I gathered up the music coming from the Northwest and devoured it. It became our lives. Funny, since I was a metal head in the 80s. This punk/metal hybrid, this movement in music was dark, brooding, contemplative, angst-ridden and heavy; polar opposite of what the hair bands were about. That is precisely what made it so exciting, so refreshing. They got it and we felt it. They were us. And we took it and made it our own. Once we found Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Temple of the Dog, there was no way we could go back. Hair bands died a painful death, kicking and screaming the whole way down. Most of them shriek at the sound of the word Nirvana. I remember the early days of grunge, some of the happiest in my life.

Grunge did meet a similar fate; the term itself was something that became stupid to me. It was the sound, or so we thought. It was soon turned into a marketing tool. It pissed me off. Perhaps it was the homogenization of the genre, or the waif looking heroin chic runway models outfitted in green fatigues and cardigans? I was ready to knock down every store mannequin in flannel.

When I found out it was Kurt who had been found dead, I felt something change. I got depressed; in fact, it took me a good week to shake the feeling that something truly great had ended. Not that the music itself had died, bands went on. Alice in Chains made more records, Pearl Jam made more records, Soundgarden made more records, but something - something I couldn't describe - had changed. Mass media in their cluelessness pounded the living shit out of the "legacy of Kurt Cobain." What did he leave us with? There’s not much to be said that hasn't been said already. Or maybe I just don't want to say it, keep it to myself. Was Kurt the voice of our generation? Yes, he was. No, he wasn't. None of your business. If you need to ask what mark he left - especially now - then I need not bother to tell you. He is an icon; he was talking about my generation. He was my generation. There’s a new icon TBD - to be discovered. We all have one – Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, John Lennon, and Kurt Cobain and <insert future icon here>.

Layne Staley died 2 years ago today; Lay undiscovered for 2 weeks. I'm still bothered by it. Truly one of the saddest things I have ever heard. I have to remember that this is the life, and death, he ultimately chose. I go on believing he was the kind person he's said to have been and will forever be the greatest voice in history.

Rest in Peace.
Love, Anngelle

Nashua Telegraph article from March 9:

"Holy God!" is what I said when I saw the print copy. The photo was gigantic, it scared me! As comedian Scott "Ro" Roberge told me, "No offense Anngelle, but it must've been a slow news day." True, True.

Nashua DJ named one of Boston’s top bachelorettes

Anngelle Wood, a Nashua resident and co-host on Boston radio station WFNX, was recently named by the Boston Metro newspaper as one of the city’s top bachelorettes.

Cool, down to earth, unpretentious and funny are a few adjectives Anngelle Wood thinks describe herself.

“Actually, I’d like to think that I’m funny first, then all the rest,” she said.

Wood, who hails from Nashua, was nominated as one of Boston’s most eligible bachelorettes by the Boston Metro newspaper in its “Bachelors & Bachelorettes of Boston” feature last month, which said “this sassy single is a fixture on the Boston music scene.”

Aside from now being one of the area’s more notable singles, the 32-year-old works as a co-host and entertainment editor for the 101.7 WFNX morning show. FNX, a radio station based out of Boston, also broadcasts in New Hampshire as 92.1 FM.

“I am not quite sure how (the nomination) came together,” Wood said. “I was asked by an FNX listener that writes for the Boston Metro. It was very cool to be listed next to (Patriots’ quarterback) Tom Brady, but the bachelorette term is a bit silly. It’s been pretty played out due to that TV show I never watch.”

Her new fame has led to some strange encounters that have taken Wood some time to get used to.

“I have gotten several e-mails from people that I know, haven’t seen or heard from in years and many people I’ve never met,” Wood said. “I get recognized when I’m out lately - pretty unusual for a radio DJ. It’s typically an anonymous existence.”

If you had asked Wood about her newfound fame 10 years ago, she would have thought you were joking.

“I was one of those (people) that did not know what I wanted to do with my life,” Wood said. “As a kid, I thought doing radio was like being on TV, which, at that time, seemed completely unattainable.”
In 1996, Wood decided to make the move to Boston, where she attended The New England Art Institute, and try her luck in the entertainment world.

“I just made up my mind to give it a try,” Wood said. “I started doing a college show. I landed a few local music shows, which I loved.”

Wood was fortunate enough to make some good connections while she was in school, which led to her job at FNX.

“(The former) morning guy, Tai, was one of my teachers and encouraged me to intern with him (at FNX), and I’m very glad I did,” she said. “It opened a lot of doors. I got hired in 1998 as a part-time DJ, did a stint on mid-days in 2001 and joined the morning show in 2002.”

For Wood, working in the entertainment business leaves her with little free time to do much else, but it suits her well.

“It’s a great job to have, and I pretty much eat, sleep and breathe radio in terms of constantly reading about what’s going on in the headlines, the music scene, politics, entertainment,” Wood said. “I like to be informed.”

Along with having her dream job, Wood now also has what she feels as a greater ability to help others and to make people aware of certain situations.

“My ‘pet project’ is animal rescue,” she said. “I support animal adoption, spay and neuter programs, education, abuse prevention and foster care. It means a lot to those who work hard for the cause.”

She also feels strongly about the local musicians, because she knows they work hard at their jobs and deserve to get noticed. FNX, like several other Boston radio stations, has shows dedicated specifically to local bands.

“I like to support (the local music acts),” Wood said. “It’s also cool to be heard in Boston on 101.7 and, as of a few years ago, in southern New Hampshire and Maine at 92.1. When I was in high school in New Hampshire, I didn’t have access to the kind of music we now get from FNX.”

And, of course, the entertainment business has its perks. The short list of Wood’s brushes with fame include Billy Idol, Iggy Pop, Chris Cornell and Tom Morello of Audioslave, Chino Moreno from the Deftones, Everclear, A Perfect Circle, Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains, Blondie, Echo and the Bunnymen, actor Johnny Knoxville and comedians Dane Cook and Stephen Lynch.

Of all the famous people Wood has met, she has two favorites.

“Nick Hornby - he wrote ‘About A Boy,’ ‘High Fidelity,’ ‘Songbook’ - was on the show a few months ago,” she said. “Like any guest, you have no idea what you are in for. Of course, I was thrilled to meet him, as he is one of my favorite writers. He turned out to be absolutely amazing, gracious, kind and humble.”

Wood’s other favorite interview belongs to Cornell and Morello of the band Audioslave.

“I have been a fan of Soundgarden - Chris’ old band - since the beginning, so meeting him was a dream come true,” she said. “They, too, were friendly and sweet. I sat on a couch in between them, and we just talked and talked. I never bothered to prepare any questions - there was no need. It turned out to be the interview I am most proud of to date.”

But there is a certain band Wood is clamoring to get to.

“I’d like to meet and interview Pearl Jam,” Wood said. “With that, I can die happy.”

Nov 28, 04 - Overserved, the movie I have a very tiny part in, is complete. Think Clerks meets Cheers. It's scheduled for a Spring 2004 release. Congrats to director Joe Gatto and cast!

Tues, Nov 11, 2003 - What an amazing day. Famed author Nick Hornby (About A Boy, High Fidelity) was on the show today.  I'm a huge fan, think everything he's written is brilliant (and seen the movies!). What's better is that he's amazingly cool! His latest book, Songbook, is out now. Nick played a number of songs that he wrote about in the book. You can get the hard copy that is accompanied by a disc of 11 of the 31 songs in Songbook. It could very well be one of my favorite shows we've ever done. Can you keep a secret? Nick told me that  he's working on a movie based on his book Fever Pitch about the Red Sox. John Cusack may work with him on it.
